Toward the conservation of a World Heritage value site - challenge in Hashima Island

Profile:
Yasuyoshi Okada was born in 1949 in Osaka, Japan, and is an architectural historian, currently professor of the Institute for Cultural Studies of Ancient Iraq, Kokushikan University, Tokyo. He took a doctorate in engineering from Kyoto University in 1994 with a dissertation titled “Historical Study on the Spatial Specific in the Mesopotamian Architecture (in Japanese)”. His research works cover the urban and architectural development mainly in the context of ancient West Asian civilization as well as the cultural property conservation. He is a vice president of ICOMOS Japan and has recently been involved in many cases of World Heritage nomination process in Japan and overseas.

Durability of concrete: prescribing composition or requiring performance?

Profile:
Geert DE SCHUTTER is full professor at Ghent University, Belgium. He is doing research in the field of concrete technology, at the Magnel Laboratory for Concrete Research, Department of Structural Engineering. He is laureate of several national and international awards, among which the Vreedenburgh Award in 1998, the RILEM Robert L' Hermite Medal in 2001, and the ACI Anderson Medal in 2014. In 2002 he was invited professor at Oita University, Japan. Since 2008, he is invited professor at the University of Cergy-Pontoise, near Paris, France. In 2012, he was awarded the Francqui Chair at the University of Liege, Belgium. From 2014 to 2017, G. De Schutter is guest professor at Tongji University, Shanghai, China. From February 2009 to February 2014, Prof. G. De Schutter was also Director of Development of RILEM. At present, he is still member of RILEM Bureau, and RILEM Development Advisory Committee (DAC), and is RILEM Regional Convener for East-Asia.
