Technical Committee on the Use of
Sea Water in Concrete

JCI-TC-121A

Purporse of the Committee

In 2050, according to UN, more than half of the world population will not be able to get enough drinking water, so research on saving fresh water is seriously needed. In this context, the use of sea water, whose percentage is 97% of the total water on the earth, is absolutely needed.
In concrete industry, several billion tons of water, as mixing water, curing water and cleaning water, is annually used on the earth, and the use of sea water is inhibited. If the use of sea water in concrete industry is permitted, the fresh water is much saved.
In this research, information on the usage of sea water as mixing water and curing water etc. will be done and the problems and remedies will be investigated with experiments and/or literature survey. Also, new methods on production and construction with sea water will be proposed through experiments and/or simulations.

Activity Program

This committee is organaized by 4 working group(WG)s. Activity plans of each WG are as follows:

  • WG1 (Survey WG):Survey on the examples of concrete mixed with seawater and unwashed sea sand
    (1) Case studies (good and bad examples, examples in other countries)
    (2) Survey on the codes and standards in Japan and other countries
    (3) Field survey of existing concrete structures mixed with sea water or sea sand.
  • WG2 (Evaluation WG):Evaluation of the properties of concrete mixed and cured with seawater
    (1) Influence of seawater as mixing water and sea sand on concrete properties and steel corrosion
    (2) Influence of seawater as curing water on concrete properties and steel corrosion
    (3) Investigation of the effect of anti-corrosion chemicals on steel corrosion in concrete mixed with sea water
  • WG3 (Performance Improvement WG):Studies on the improvement of the performance of concrete mixed with sea water and proposal of applicable reinforcing materials
    (1) Investigation of the positive effect of seawater as mixing water in concrete and it's mechanism
    (2) Investigation of the effectiveness of corrosion resistant steel and bamboo reinforcements in the case of concrete mixed with seawater
    (3) (Investigation of deterioration prediction and durability verification methods)
  • WG4 (Construction WG):Studies on manufacturing and casting methods for concrete mixed with seawater
    (1) Statistics survey on the amount of water utilization (including seawater) in construction works
