Concrete Journal, Vol.35, No.10, October 1997

Synopsis
After Kobe Earthquake, an urgent seismic strengthening has been conducted for railway reinforced concrete viaducts. As the main strengthening method, the steel jacket is used. On the other hand, new handly seismic strengthening methods using fiber reinforced plastics and so forth have been developed. Design and construction guidelines adopting limit state design method have been implemented in some of these new methods. This report introduces characteristics of these recent seismic strengthening methods and their design principles including steel jacket strengthening and reinforced concrete strengthening.
