Synopsis
Hybrid structures generally consist of steel elements and concrete elements. However, carbon fiber sheets have become usueful elements as new materials in addition to former two elements. The effects of hybridity are such as compensatien of characteristics, superposing, composite effect, advantage in erection, quick construction, adaptability in retrofit, etc. Big progress can be seen in the construction of bridges by applying hybrid structure. Especially, remarkable examples are prestressed concrete bridges having corrugated steel webs and bridges having steel elements in the central part of the main span to reduce dead weight. The potential effect of prestressing to the composite construction should be clearly recognized. The seismic retrofit of concrete piers by using carbon fiber sheets has been realized in long span bridge structures.
