Synopsis
The new artificial lightweight aggregates, which have both higher strength and lower water absorption than the ordinary lightweight aggregates, have been developed recently. Super lightweight concrete using this aggregate can obtain lightweight, higher compressive strength, greater durability and easier handling than those of conventional lightweight concrete. This report summarizes the basic properties of the super lightweight aggregates and fundamental mechanical properties of the super lightweight concrete such as ultimate flexural, shear and fatigue strengths. Furthermore, the application to structural members of the super lightweight concrete and the committee activities about lightweight concrete are introduced in this report.
