Synopsis
The San-yo Shinkansen has been playing an important role as an artery in Japan, since starting its operation in 1975. In this paper, introducing the present condition of concrete structures in the San-yo Shinkansen, appropriate methods to maintain the structures are examined.
Our inspection results showed that the carbonation mainly caused the deterioration of the reinforced concrete structures. In addition, it was shown that the more the amount of chloride ion increased, the more the corrosion of rebar progressed. The strength of deteriorated viaducts is satisfied with the design strength under current condition, which means structurally safe. However appropriate maintenance and research and development are necessary to keep the San-yo Shinkansen good condition.
