Synopsis
Cracks, spalls and fall of concrete due to premature deterioration of concrete structures have recently made a social issue. Falling concrete pieces on in-service road may result in the public disaster. Japan Highway Public Corporation Published the Handbook for Preventing Methods of Falling Concrete in November 2000. This Handbook can be applied for to concrete structures. This paper explains the background of he issue, concept of the handbook, inspection method for deteriorated concrete structures, and required performance to prevent falling pieces of concrete.
