Synopsis
A new retrofitting system using divided steel plates is developed as a substitute method for steel jackets. The advantage of this device is that its installation to the columns is quite simple and does not require any complex instrument. Hence the installation work is expected to be easy in a small space where the application of the conventional method is considered to be extremely hard. The experiment was carried out to investigate the shear strength and ductility of the full scale RC column specimens retrofitted with the proposed devices, and the results showed an adequate improvement. It was also found that the retrofit effect with the device can be successfully estimated by the conventional formula to evaluate the strength of RC structures.
