Synopsis
Thirty years have passed since the introduction of the Revised Seismic Design Method in 1981. In that time, the design and construction technology for RC structures has made great advances owing to the emergence of high-rise RC structures and other factors. The Architectural Institute of Japan has now published the Standard for Lateral Load-carrying Capacity Calculation of Reinforced Concrete Structures (Draft), which reflects the latest research on such RC structure technology. Besides a lateral load-bearing capacity calculation method for frames that uses non-linear incremental analysis, this standard presents also a member type identification method based on structural test data, and a concrete design method that guarantees the global collapse mode of frames. No academic standards regarding load-bearing capacity calculation have been published in the last twenty years, and this latest standard is expected to contribute to the rational structural design.
