Synopsis
To elucidate varied and complex changes in the internal physical properties of concrete, the author conducted research with a focus on X-ray CT imaging. In recent years, studies based on the visualization of the interior of concrete using X-ray CT have been increasing in Japan and abroad alike. It is thought that the knowledge obtained through these studies will be applicable to periodic health checkups and detailed inspections of structures. This paper, based on the author's research experience, introduces X-ray CT imaging, its characteristics, and some application examples. X-ray CT imaging is shown to allow the visualization of the fracture process due to differences in deformation resistance of aggregate under load, the process of moisture loss from the surface and volume change during drying shrinkage, and the expansion fracture process during freeze-thaw cycling in water.
