Synopsis
The authors have developed a new seismic retrofitting method with the aim of improving the productivity of seismic retrofitting of railway viaduct piers. The method consists in placing precast panels around an existing pier using modular reinforcing steel plates and bolts, and filling the gaps between the precast panels and the pier with high strength fiber reinforced mortar. Although guidelines for the use of high strength fiber reinforced mortar, which is one of the components used in this method, have been developed for use in bridges and other structures, there are few cases of its use in seismic retrofitting work, and it was necessary to develop a rational design method for seismic retrofitting. This paper describes the loading tests that were conducted during development for evaluation of shear load capacity and deformation capacity, and introduces the formulas for calculating the performance of members taking into account the use of high strength fiber reinforced mortar.
