Development of a New Dam Concrete Transport System (SC Premium Belt Conveyor) and Its Implementation at the Asuwa River Dam

Synopsis
In concrete dam construction, the concrete work (production, transport, and placing) accounts for most of the cost and construction time, and concrete transport in particular is important for improving productivity. For this reason, we decided to develop the “SC Premium Belt Conveyor,” a concrete transport system that (1) can transport concrete directly over steep slopes at dam sites, (2) has a high transport capacity (over 200 m3/h), and (3) minimizes quality issues, such as material separation. In developing this system, we focused on a bag-shaped belt conveyor that wraps and transports concrete, and began by verifying the required performance in a demonstration test in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture. Then, after various refinements, the system was implemented in the construction work on the Asuwa River Dam.
