Study on the Application of Fly Ash Concrete to Expressway Structures in the Tokai Region

Synopsis
Fly ash is known to contribute to the mitigation of alkali-silica reaction, the enhancement of long-term strength, and the improvement of transport resistance in concrete. Despite these advantages, its application in concrete structures in the Tokai region has remained limited. To utilize fly ash effectively in expressway concrete structures in the Tokai region, a joint study was conducted by JERA Co., Inc. and Central Nippon Expressway Co., Ltd. using fly ash produced at the Hekinan Thermal Power Plant that meets the quality requirements of Class II specified in JIS A 6201A. cement replacement ratio of 20% was adopted based on experimental results confirming the effectiveness of the fly ash in mitigating alkali-silica reaction. Fresh and hardened properties of fly ash concrete intended for application to reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures were experimentally investigated. The results demonstrate that fly ash concrete structures can be designed and constructed in accordance with the same standards applied to conventional plain concrete.
